Online Shutdown Postponed

On 2nd October I wrote the following:
"HMRC have announced that their regular Autumn closure of their online services will occur between 06:00 on Friday 11 October 2013 and 06:00 on Monday 14 October 2013."
Seemingly 'twas but a false alarm.

The shutdown has been postponed after discovering more work was required than planned. After running tests to establish what work was needed, HMRC found it would have missed its Monday deadline to return the system to working order.

An HMRC spokesman is quoted in last week's Accountancyage:
"Whenever we undertake maintenance work we run rigorous tests beforehand.

These checks were completed last night and we discovered that there was a problem and that part of the upgrade wouldn't have been complete by Monday morning as previously announced.

This means that all our services will be running normally this weekend and we are working to choose a new date and approach that has the least impact on our customers."
Any guesses as to when the new shutdown will occur?

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. We came into work last Thursday morning ready to do the two days of training modules that the higher-ups had told us to do because the systems we use all the time were supposed to be down. Only to find that the (recently outsourced) on-line learning system which we have to use couldn't handle the load of large numbers of staff trying to log in to it. So, thumb-twiddling until about mid-morning when an intranet announcement by our new, super-duper, bussed-in-from-the-private-sector-to-show-us-how-it's-done CIO told us that they had decided late on Wednesday evening that they couldn't go ahead with the 'enhancements' as scheduled.

At this time, we still don't have any idea when it will finally happen.

  2. Probably not the greatest idea to get all your staff to take all their CBT courses on the same day. Hardly surprising it crashed.
